IEEE-USA Offers Three New Webinars in February and Early March

By Georgia C. Stelluto

In February and early March, IEEE-USA is offering three new webinar on sustainability at work, negotiation strategies for women, and the pitfalls of a perfect life-let it go!

Sustainability at Work

Presenter: Marilyn Waite
Date: 16 February
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 PM EST

Presenter Marilyn Waite will examine the nexus between sustainability and careers. Waite will explore concepts pertinent to professionals with engineering backgrounds and/or working in STEM fields. Using the SURF Framework she developed, and professional narratives specific to STEM, attendees will leave with a better understanding of how they can incorporate sustainability into their job tasks and career trajectory. The webinar will also highlight the benefits of pursuing sustainability in careers.

Waite’s vision is a world where sustainability values of social cohesion–environmental consciousness, intergenerational equity, and economic health drive decision-making and business practices. An engineer, and author of Sustainability at Work, she has addressed audiences worldwide on sustainability in careers, textiles, water and energy.

Negotiation Strategies for Women

Presenter: Elizabeth Lions
Date: 24 February 2017
Time: 1-2 PM EST

Tune in to find out from presenter Elizabeth Lions:

  • Why some women don’t like to talk about money
  • How men see money differently
  • How to ask for your market value — and get it

For women in fields like engineering or IT, the office and its politics can sometimes be a tricky maze that can slow or prevent you from achieving your professional goals. IEEE-USA is proud to present part one of a two-part series on women’s professional development topics, to help you chart a smooth course to success.

Women in technical fields often long for solid advice around the topics of negotiations; how to navigate office politics; and how to get noticed in all the right ways to get a promotion. In this webinar, Lions will explore ways to discuss a promotion–without having butterflies in your stomach. And ways you can be prepared to discuss your performance, without being defensive.

Part Two will be held on 24 March 2017 at 1PM EST.

Pitfalls of a Perfect Life, and Advantages of Letting Go

Presenter: Nancy Martin, Manager, Technical Development, GE Global Research Center
Date: 2 March 2017
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 PM EST

Perfectionism served many of us well while we grew up. It allowed us to go to the best schools and get the best jobs. Yet, once we are in the “real” world, perfectionism often leads us to a life of working too hard, enjoying too little, and feeling like nothing is ever good enough. Add to that that “perfect” is now measured in more subjective ways (we don’t take tests at work), and you can find yourself working more than ever before.

Presenter Nancy Martin has worked for GE and held management positions primarily in engineering and research. She currently works at GE’s Global Research Center in Niskayuna, N.Y., where she leads technical education for the company, including the Edison Engineering Program. GE is a high tech company with over 55,000 technologists. Martin enjoys speaking on topics like work/life balance, self-confidence, perfectionism, and finding career passion.
