The new Telecommunications History Highlights e-book is a collection of articles written by the staff of the IEEE History Center. It highlights some of the many triumphs in the world of telecommunications, and is a sampling of events and persons the staff found particularly seminal and interesting.
The authors note that “Telecommunications has been one of the most influential technologies in human history. As the speed and volume of the transmission of messages increased, history itself has been made and altered. Political and economic events have been shaped by telecommunications, such as the Zimmerman telegram, which precipitated the United States’ entry into World War then by the telephone, and most recently by fiber optic data lines. Telecommunications has not only influenced history, it has also allowed us to share and participate in historical events, whether in the form of the televised Moon landings, or the now instantaneous window on world events afforded by web cams, blogs, Twitter, and other technologies which share information instantly and widely.”
Some of the articles in this e-book include:
- The Founding of Western Union
- Alexander Graham Bell
- Aleksandr Popov’s Contributions to Wireless Communication
- Public Telephones
- Reginald Fessenden’s Brant Rock Broadcast
- Edwin Howard Armstrong, Radio Engineer
- Birth of the Information Age
- Telstar Satellite and the Technical Emmy Award
- Fiber Optic Communication
- Communications Technology Paradoxes
- From Gaining Weeks to Milliseconds: The Transatlantic Cable
