In 2008, IEEE-USA started its webinar program, producing informative courses to help educate IEEE members about a vast array of career subjects. Since then, IEEE-USA webinars have produced webinars on a variety of topics, addressing such subjects as previewing IEEE-USA member services, showcasing the IEEE-USA Fellows program, and educating members about the Student Professional Awareness Activities (SPACs) program. In its 2013 programming, IEEE-USA is, once again, focusing strongly on career topics.
In first quarter 2013, IEEE-USA career webinars took off strongly, with presentations from two great career consultants. Published author Elizabeth Lions, a long-time IEEE-USA friend and consultant gave a great presentation on “Get Your Resume Out of Cyberspace and onto the Manager’s Desk!” Lions’ main focus was providing tips to job seekers/qualified candidates, so their resumes would not go unnoticed when applying online.
Career coach Pegotty Cooper offered participants an excellent presentation: “Recharge Your Career.” Cooper provided insightful information to those IEEE members who may be feeling stagnant in their current positions.

IEEE-USA’s Employment and Career Services Committee (ECSC) is planning to produce a number of career-focused webinars for IEEE members in 2013.
ECSC members have already conducted two webinars. The first, “Managing Your Career,” was presented by Peggy Hutcheson, long-time ECSC member and founding partner of the Odyssey Group; and ECSC Chair, Ed Kirchner. The goal of this webinar is to help engineers and technology professionals achieve lifelong employability, by focusing on their own professional and career development.
The second is “Building Your Online Resume Using LinkedIn,” by Kim Brown, assistant director of alumni programs for Syracuse University Career Services; and Don Herres, IEEE Region 1 employment & career activities coordinator. This webinar explores what key elements you need to have in your resume; what you should avoid; and how to format your resume, so it is easily read by both a person and a computer.
