Professional Engineering Licensure Exam Dates

By Juliet Hurtig, Ph.D., P.E.

The National Council of Engineering Examination Services (NCEES) oversees the development, scoring and examination schedule for 27 discipline-specific Professional Engineering (PE) examinations. To best support the 27 PE exams, NCEES will be changing when some exams are offered. IEEE members pursuing a PE license are often interested in the three PE exams within the Electrical and Computer topic:  Power; Electronics, Controls, and Communications; and Computer Engineering.

There will be no change to the PE Electrical and Computer: Power exam dates. The most popular of the three PE Electrical and Computer exams, the Power Exam will continue to be offered year-round. The Power exam is computer-based and administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.

The other two PE Electrical and Computer exams attract a smaller examinee candidate pool, and while these exams are computer-based and offered at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers, these exams are only available on one day annually.

The PE Electrical and Computer: Electronics, Controls, and Communications exam is typically only available on one day in the fall. The next available exam date is 24 October 2023. Starting in 2024, the exam will move to a spring date and annually will be offered every year in April. Registration for the April 2024 exam opens in the fall.

There will be no change to the PE Electrical and Computer: Computer Engineering exam dates. This fall, it is scheduled for 24 October 2023. In future years, it will continue to be offered in the fall.
